Steal A Tree How to Steal from Gnomes
Approach, grab, sprint home, and leave any rare your speed cannot finish.
Stealing in Steal A Tree means taking a sapling from a gnome garden and planting it on your plot. It does not mean posing with a rainbow tree in someone else’s lane. Gnomes guard the gardens. A tag drops the sapling you are carrying. Later gardens demand more speed than the starter lawn. If you cannot outrun the gnome, you are not stealing — you are delivering fruit to whoever is behind you.
This page is the route. Pair it with Getting Started if your vat is still rusty, and with treadmill and speed if later gardens keep tagging you. Controls for grab, sprint, and drop live on Controls.
What you are stealing
Starter saplings look like a glowing cube of fruit. That cube is the correct target for the first many runs. Official gallery fruit behind those cubes includes banana, grape, apple, orange, strawberry, watermelon, and pineapple. Ultra-rare crystal and rainbow trees are marketed around 1 in 1,000,000. They juice for more later. They are also the easiest way to waste a full stamina bar and gift a trophy to another player on the 6-player server.
Event gardens show candy or ice-cream gnomes in the official gallery. Treat them as gnomes with a costume, not as free loot. The tag still drops the carry.
Approach
Stand off the plot and read the garden before you commit. Look at three things: gnome facing, path home, and whether another player is already mid-grab. On a 6-player server the nearest cube is a shared resource. If two of you grab the same sapling, one of you is about to get tagged in the pile-up.
Enter from the side the gnome is not staring at. Do not dance in front of the hat. Do not stop to open the Index mid-garden. Grab is an interact: E or click on PC, tap prompt on mobile. As soon as the sapling is in your hands, you are in a chase even if the gnome has not turned yet.
Sprint home
The winning line is the shortest walkable path to your plot pad, not the prettiest. Cut corners that do not clip you into geometry. Hold sprint the entire carry. If you learned movement on Controls and still feel slow, the problem is Steps, not the thumb stick. Train on the treadmill until this garden is boring, then move out.
Do not weave through extra trees to “lose” the gnome. Extra distance is extra tag time. Do not jump unless a ledge actually blocks the lane. Do not stop at another player’s vat to juice mid-carry — you are still holding their problem.
Plant as soon as you cross your pad. A sapling in your hands on your own plot is still droppable if a gnome follows far enough. Get it in the dirt.
What happens when you get tagged
A gnome tag drops the carried sapling. It does not always kill you. The cube sits on the ground. You can pick it up again if the gnome has peeled off and your path home is still shorter than the next tag. That scoop is correct on starter lawns. It is usually wrong on later gardens, because the second tag happens before you finish the animation.
If you drop at the garden lip, scoop. If you drop in the open lane with another player nearby, leave it. Fighting over a dropped rare is how two people both walk home empty. If you drop a mutated tree, see Fruit Mutations before you try a hero retrieve — mutated fruit is worth more juice, which is exactly why the rest of the server is watching the ground.
Stage and speed gates
Gardens are not equal. Early gardens match starter speed. Later gardens are speed gates: the gnome closes distance faster, the path home is longer, or both. You feel this as a tag you cannot outrun, not as a locked door. The fix is treadmill Steps, then Trails after Iron Treadmill, not a braver camera angle.
Use this rule: if you cannot steal a common cube from a garden three times in a row without a tag, you are not ready for that garden’s rare. Train. The speed planner exists so you stop guessing. Treadmill Speed is the spend page.
Do not “practice” a later garden by repeatedly dropping the same rare. You are teaching the server where the loot lands.
Event gnomes
Candy and ice-cream gnomes show up in official gallery art and in weekend events. They still tag. They still drop the carry. Event saplings are not a reason to skip the vat or the treadmill. If the event garden sits behind a speed gate you have not cleared, watch it, juice commons, and come back after Steps. The weekend patch notes are where event gnome timing belongs, not in a screenshot chat.
When not to steal a rare
Do not steal a rare, crystal, or rainbow tree when any of these are true:
- You have not cleared that garden with a common three times in a row.
- Your vat is still rusty and you needed that time to juice volume.
- Another player with obvious trail speed is already in the garden.
- You are one tag away from dropping in the open lane.
- You planned to flex the tree instead of juicing its fruit.
Walking away is a successful steal you did not fail. A 1-in-1,000,000 tree on the ground behind a gnome is still in the game. A 1-in-1,000,000 tree dropped in the lane is now someone else’s Index entry.
After the plant
A stolen sapling only pays if it grows fruit and that fruit hits the vat. Plant, harvest, juice. Upgrade capacity so the next steal has somewhere to go. Mutations can roll on fruit and trees; they raise juice value, which also raises how badly other players want your plot looking unprotected. Hunt and protect details sit on Fruit Mutations. Cash math sits on juice upgrades.
If you came here from a dead first hour, go back to Getting Started and steal cubes until the vat is no longer the joke. If you came here because later gnomes feel glued to your back, you do not need a sneakier approach — you need Steps.
Steal commons until the garden is boring. Plant them. Juice them. Train. Then steal the rare. That order is the whole difference between a juice stand and a highlight clip that ends with an empty pair of hands.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers Steal A Tree players ask after every weekend patch.
What happens if a gnome tags me while I carry a tree?
The sapling drops. Scoop it only if the gnome has peeled off and the path home is still short. On later gardens, leave the drop and train more speed. See treadmill and speed.
Should I steal the crystal or rainbow tree I just saw?
Only if you already steal commons from that same garden without getting tagged. Otherwise you will drop a 1-in-1,000,000 showcase in the lane. Walk away. Mutations and value: Fruit Mutations.
Do event candy or ice-cream gnomes play by different steal rules?
No. They still tag and they still drop the carry. Treat event gardens as speed-gated gnome gardens with a costume. Check the weekend patch for timing, not for a free pass.
Why do later gardens feel impossible?
They are speed gates. Upgrade the treadmill, hit Iron Treadmill before Trails, and stop entering those gardens on starter Steps. Controls will not save a slow character. Read Controls only if the grab itself is missing.
Can other players steal the sapling I dropped?
Yes. Six players share the server. A tagged drop in the open lane is public. That is why you do not carry a rare you cannot finish.
Is stealing from gnome gardens the same as the first-hour route?
The first hour uses the same grab-and-run, but it insists on common cubes. Full onboarding: Getting Started. This page is the chase, the tag, and the decision to walk away.
